PM opens Curtin Uni’s new engineering centre
The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard officially opened the Engineering Pavilion, which is stage one of two for the $32.5 million facility, due for completion in 2012.
The new facility, described as world class by Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket, is for undergraduate education and engineering research.
“This is a building that the Federal Government contributed $20.5 million to,” Ms Gillard said. “In Western Australia we know the economy is running strong, this gives us an historic opportunity to get young people opportunity in life, get them a job, a high paid, high skilled job for the future.
“The industry players that are here today and who have supported this building, big businesses like Rio and Woodside are crying out for skilled engineers, they want to give young people an opportunity, they want to give young engineers a start, and here at Curtin University, through this new facility, Curtin University will be able to better train and better skill its young engineers.”
Corporate sponsors Clough, KBR, Lycopodium, Monadelphous, Rio Tinto, Thiess, Verve Energy, WesTrac and Woodside provided an additional $2 million funding. The balance of $10m was funded by Curtin.
The Curtin Engineering Pavilion has been submitted for a five star green rating, based on its innovative environmental design and technologies.
Stage two of the Curtin Engineering Pavilion Complex will consist of an additional four-level learning centre linked to the Pavilion.
